Hard anodizing

In addition to our conventional anodizing, we have also been offering hard anodizing for several years, which makes us a flexible supplier of aluminum surface treatment.

What distinguishes hard anodizing from regular anodizing?

Hard anodizing is carried out with higher current and voltage, while the process is run at significantly lower temperatures, allowing for higher layers to be built up. This combination means that the oxide is built up in a different way:

  • larger amount of aluminum oxide
  • smaller and fewer pores
  • much harder and more durable surface layer

The result is a surface that can withstand both mechanical stress and tough environments at a level that conventional anodizing cannot reach.

Typical areas of application for hard anodizing are components in the aerospace industry, hydraulics, mechanical engineering and medical technology, where durability and precision are crucial.

We can color hard anodized parts black. Our process tapping can handle formats up to 500 × 400 × 300mm, which allows us to handle both larger construction details in smaller batches and very small components in larger series – while maintaining precision throughout the process.

When should you choose hard anodizing?

If you need:

  • Increased wear resistance
  • Longer service life in exposed environments
  • Minimal wear due to friction
  • Or a more “high-tech” appearance

With hard anodizing, we can build significantly thicker layers – anywhere from around 20µm up to 100µm, depending on the detail and requirements. The most common range is between 30–45µm. Different aluminum alloys behave differently in the process, and some are more demanding than others. These are exactly the kinds of challenges we enjoy at Ahlins, so don’t hesitate to contact us with your inquiry: offert@ahlins.com

P.S. Alloy 7075 – or the 7000 series in general – is in our opinion a real top alloy for hard anodizing.

We also have:

Anodizing - In regular anodizing, we build layers in the range of 5–25µm

Coloring - We have the ability to color aluminum in our standard colors black, blue, red, yellow. We can also make special colors according to customer requests, please contact us if you want to know more

Passivation - Creates a thin, passivating layer that provides effective corrosion protection and excellent adhesion for subsequent painting, powder coating or bonding.
